Punjabi is language spoken by most Muslims from South Asia, yet it isn’t regarded as a langauge of substance. For decades Punjabi has been passed over for it’s more formal friend, Urdu. There has become a growing awareness throughout the community that Punjabi is dying out for Muslims and won’t be a language passed down to future generations.

As someone who doesn’t speak Punjabi, yet grew up hearing the language, I wanted to find a way to connect with it.

beti is the first iteration of a typeface created to help form bridges between Punjabi and English. Each letterform has been designed to incorporate aspects of the Punjabi language as it is spoken. Through the contrast of curves and rigid lines, beti pays homage to a beautiful and underrated language.
